Preparing for your first ballet class

What to wear, what to bring and what will actually happen on the day.

What to wear

For a first class, fitted clothing a child can move in is enough — no uniform is needed until they have decided to continue. Hair should be tied back off the face.

Shoes

Bare feet or socks are fine for a first class. We will advise on ballet shoes afterwards, so nothing is bought twice or in the wrong size.

Arriving

Come ten minutes early so your child can see the room before the class begins. Most children settle faster when they have not been rushed in.

What happens

The class begins with something familiar and musical, moves through simple exercises, and ends with a short curtsey or bow. Some children join in immediately; others watch for the first ten minutes. Both are normal.
